Relax, or as some might say, flow with the go.
Today’s class starts with nikajo. This lock looks simple, like butter – when it is done right.
There is a feel to this technique. You must be able to feel or sense when Uke is locked before you can execute the technique. The harder you try to execute this technique the less effective the technique will be.
The magic lies in your ability to relax. When you relax you can sense subtle changes in Uke and you can execute the technique with great and effortless power. This is the magic of Yoshinkan Aikido. Effortless and overwhelming power that leaves your opponent helpless to resist, no matter their size or strength. As I have written before feeling is believing (I have laid claim to this phrase – sorry Sensei - Sensei Derek Bindner uses it in our classes).
I find this completely fascinating. It is incredible how powerful Yoshinkan Aikido can be when done with precision and in a state of zen. This also speaks to the spirit of Aikido, calm in the eye of the storm.
The harder I tried to execute nikajo the less effective it was. When I let go of thinking about it and just “felt” it, the technique was butter. It was powerful and with complete ease.
Every time I train a new depth to Yoshinkan Aikido is revealed to me and my hunger to learn more grows. I wish that everyone could experience this.
